Stanford offers an annual Teacher Training Camp to familiarize teachers with the materials of the course. The 2017 teacher training camp will take place from July 31- August 4. See below for comments from teachers who attended previous Teacher Camps. Mike Towne, Computer Science Teacher, Valverde High School District, CA This is our inaugural year at Orange Vista High School. Since our school is a STEM magnate school, our goal is to increase access to STEM education and careers for students who are traditionally underserved in these fields. Access without rigor, however, is a hollow promise. So, our collaboration with Stanford University to develop a Symbolic Logic course for our school will be one of the linchpins of our program. In addition to the curricular support, this collaborative effort lends credibility and recognition to our program. It is far more effective for us to say we offer this course with the help and support of Stanford University than to simply put it on our master schedule. As the teacher of this new course, I personally appreciate the generous time spent to prepare me for the rigors of teaching the course. With all the demands placed on me as a classroom teacher, it is safe to say I could not do this without the help and support of the team at Stanford. I would be less likely to achieve these goals. David Thompson, Computer Science Teacher, Morris Town High School, NJ As I worked toward my BA in Mathematics, I was exposed to several logic courses in college. In the years since, I have used logical thinking in my instruction and in my problem solving as a school administrator. However, like many things, logic and logical thinking must be exercised to stay fresh. The logic training at Stanford University, and the subsequent course I will facilitate, has begun to scratch an itch deep within my brain hungry for logic. The logic course will allow me to work more directly with students than my administrative role typically allows, to satisfy personal intellectual needs, and to facilitate a blended learning model within my school. I am truly excited for the opportunity that the logic training has provided. Akane Akaban, English Teacher, Fremont Union High School District The teacher-training course was extremely useful to me in several ways. First, the training gave me access to highly knowledgeable individuals (professors, graduate students, and other teachers) who not only taught me formal logic (my knowledge was rudimentary before the training), but who were also very experienced in the teaching of logic and could therefore give me tips about major areas of struggle for students learning the subject. The training included one-on-one tutoring from graduate students, which was most helpful in catering to my specific needs and gaps in knowledge. Second, the training gave me access to all the engaging materials/curriculum developed for teaching logic and showed me how it could be implemented. Finally, it gave the confidence to tackle the development of the unit on logic that will be taught in the new Digital Innovation and Design course that is being offered in the Fremont Union High School District (currently at Fremont High School and Homestead High School). |
