CommerceNet

Objective:

CommerceNet is an open, Internet-based infrastructure for electronic commerce, created and operated by a consortium of major Silicon Valley users, providers and developers under the auspices of Smart Valley, Inc. CommerceNet seeks to revolutionize the Valley's core electronics, software, and information service industries by making interaction between customers, suppliers, and development partners as efficient as interactions among internal departments. CommerceNet has well over 100 members in Silicon Valley, throughout the country, and around the world.

Approach:

The core partners of the CommerceNet Consortium are Stanford's Center for Information Technology (CIT), Enterprise Integration Technologies (EIT), and Bay Area Regional Research Network (BARRNet), a part of BBN.

Stanford Center for Information Technology (CIT)'s efforts on CommerceNet are provided by the Logic Group, the Knowledge Systems Laboratory, and the Database Group.

Primary CommerceNet funding to the core partners comes from an ARPA TRP (Technology Reinvestment Program) contract. This funding must be matched by cash and in-kind contributions.

Stanford's part of this project focuses research and development work in Smart Catalogs and Virtual Catalogs. This effort includes KSL's work on ontologies. Papers and Selected Presentations describing our technology and results are available.

Personnel:

Here are some of the people working as part of Stanford CIT's effort on CommerceNet. Michael R. Genesereth is the Principal Investigator. Arthur M. Keller is the Project Manger. Richard Fikes leads KSL's efforts on ontologies. Gio Wiederhold leads the Database group's efforts on search. Michael R. Genesereth leads the Logic group's efforts on interoperability.
